From a design perspective , the allnew 2025 Subaru Forester evokes the original from certain angles . The first Forester was considered a “ tall wagon ” type of SUV ; meaning , it resembled an old-school station wagon , but with higher ride height . In those early days , this was an approach many manufacturers took to convince customers that the SUV was kind of halfway between a car and a truck . In other words , the ultimate happy medium .
Built on the Subaru Impreza platform , the first Forester hit the ground running with the tried-andtrue Subaru formula for success . Powered by a 2.5-litre naturally aspirated SUBARU BOXER ® 4-cylinder , the boxy SUV featured standard allwheel drive , high ground clearance and all sorts of inherent capability in tricky driving conditions .
The second-generation model , introduced in 2002 , was cut from the same cloth : the same boxy tall wagon look , this time imbued with more aerodynamic lines to create a more modern effect . If the first Forester was a bit rough around the edges , its successor showcased a more refined approach — but it was still instantly recognizable as a Forester .
Starting with the third-generation Forester , the shape of this crowd favourite changed and the design moved in the direction of the more traditional crossover shape . More rounded and arguably less distinctive , this was also the version that created more mainstream awareness .
While the Forester has been popular among the faithful right from the very beginning , it became a mainstay on compact SUV shopping lists , especially in key markets such as Canada . When customers switched to the Subaru brand from other manufacturers , the Forester was often the reason behind the change . The third-generation version was also larger , which eventually set the stage for a more compact model to slot into the Subaru lineup .
That new model , the Crosstrek , debuted in 2012 , a year before the fourth Forester appeared on the scene . In terms of design , the fourth- and fifth-generation models brought a more aggressive look into sharp focus . Wheel arches became more prominent . The front grille grew in size . So , too , did the lower front air ducts .
The net effect was an exterior design that matched up well with the absolute toughness of the engineering of the
Forester . A pair of special trim levels on the most recent Forester , the Sport and the Wilderness™ , served to emphasize that this was no “ soft-roader ” like much of the competition . The Forester was , is and will always be the real deal .
This theme continues with the all-new , sixth-generation Forester , which is now available in retail locations across the country . Built on a revised version of the renowned Subaru Global Platform , this Forester is stronger , quieter , safer , more stable and more refined than ever .
In the construction phase , the engineers incorporated more hightensile strength materials , creating stronger joints and a superior structure overall . The new model also features a new inner / outer frame construction , more liberal use of structural adhesives and more insulation for improved sound dampening . The stronger backbone of the all-new Forester has set the stage for more precise tuning of the steering and suspension systems .
