Historically, gloves served as fashion and function.
In the sixteenth century, Queen Elizabeth owned
over 2000 pairs of gloves, and employed a wardrobe
mistress to look after them. Women who wore gloves
were known to be wealthy and titled during that era.
After the French Revolution, fashionable clothes
were made in pastels, and all outfits had to be paired
with gloves. Women would wear only white or light
pastel gloves to match their ensembles, and only
gloves that extended past their elbows.
