T
he queen of England, Audrey Hepburn,
Marilyn Monroe and Amal Clooney:
What do all these women have in
common, besides intelligence, ambition and
talent? They all have, or had, a penchant
for that classic style accessory: the glove.
Today, gloves are reserved for an excessively
formal affair like a wedding, or a celebrity
attending Awards Season, or gala events like
the Met Ball. But even in those glamorous
circles women still choose to forego such a
traditionally formal look. It’s an unfortunate
turn of events, given that the history of gloves
is a particularly interesting one.
Back in 1961, starlets like Audrey Hepburn
graced the big movie screen in the height of
elegance, complete with elbow-length, black
silk gloves in the film Breakfast at Tiffany’s.
Her look radiated class and sophistication.
Old Hollywood glam was all about the gloves.
Nowadays, when a celebrity wears gloves
with her designer gown it’s automatically
viewed as channeling that old Hollywood
glam. When Amal Clooney wore handmade
white elbow-length gloves at the 2015 Golden
Globe Awards, she was reminding us of that
Hepburn look.
