OBSTACLES
TO AUTHENTICITY
And how they can be overcome
The study also reveals compensatory effects. These compensatory
effects are based on interaction effects, i.e., effects of
one predictor variable on an outcome variable in the presence
of a second predictor variable. The compensatory effects can
be important indicators of how factors with a negative influence
on authenticity can be mitigated or even neutralised. This applies
to managers and employees alike.
Factors with a negative influence on authenticity include in
particular:
Surface Acting
is the term used for a type of behaviour in which people express
feelings that are not in tune with their true inner emotions.
While their inner emotional world remains intact, they
manipulate, for a certain purpose, the emotions they express.
Deep Acting
by contrast, describes a situation in which people actually
change their inner emotional world to meet the expectations
of those around them. The emotions they show in such a situation
have greater credibility because they in fact match their
inner emotional world.
the sheer size of an organisation
or company
negative interactions between work
and private life
work activities that require more
frequent “surface acting” and
personal belief systems that affirm
strong power and status differences
in organisations
These two types of acting have a common purpose: to
generate positive emotions with a positive influence on
the perceptions on those around them, thus enhancing
the persuasiveness of the person in question.
The results of the survey suggest how the negative effects of
these factors on authenticity can be reduced.
