TRADITIONS AS WE KNOW THEM TODAY:
In the Czech Republic there's an Easter
Monday tradition in which men spank women
with handmade whips made of willow and
decorated with ribbons. According to legend,
the willow is the first tree to bloom in the
spring, so the branches are supposed to
transfer the tree's vitality and fertility to the
women. This playful spanking is all in good fun
and isn't meant to cause pain.
In Israel Easter takes place in the city where it is believed Jesus was crucified, Christians celebrate Good
Friday by walking the same path Jesus did on the day he was nailed to the cross. Taking note of his pain that
fateful day, some of those who participate carry a cross with them in remembrance. On Easter Sunday, many
pilgrims attend a church service at Garden Tomb — the area that it is believed Jesus was buried.
In Britain people decorate eggs with different colours, then take the eggs to the top of a hill and let them roll
down. The first egg to get to the foot of the hill is the winner. Another interesting British tradition is the
decoration of Easter bonnets. Some women and girls decorate hats, called Easter bonnets. They put lots of
spring flowers on them, and wear them in Easter bonnet parades.
There are many traditions around eggs at
Easter time in the United States. One of these
is coloring and decorating eggs with dyes or
paint. Eggs are also used in games, such as
an egg rolling contest, or by having adults hide
eggs for children to find. When eggs are
hidden on Easter and children go find them
this is called an Easter Egg Hunt. Easter candy
is now often shaped like eggs.
