Ella Schotz Book Review: Out Of My Mind by Sharon M. Draper
! This empowering, enlightening, and eye-opening book will definitely make your top 10 list. It is on the fifth grade reading challenge list, but I recommend it for all ages. An eleven-year-old girl named Melody has a photographic memory. As she says in the book,“ I’ ve seen kids on T. V. who can memorize long strands of numbers and pages of poetry. So can I.” The problem with Melody, though, is that NO ONE knows it. Diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy when she was born, Melody cannot walk or talk. All she has to work with is a wheelchair and a small communication board. From wanting a Big Mac and shake to doctors who don’ t understand her, sometimes Melody can get quite a bit frustrated. But when Melody receives a special device to talk for her, people can finally hear her voice. The question is, is everyone around her ready? Read this truly sensational book to find out!
Book Review: The Mark of Athena by Rick Riordan
Ethan Burfield
! I really enjoyed this book. This book is about how seven demigods( people who have a god and a mortal parent) went to Rome and saved the world. I like the author because he not only added positive messages, but also unexpected and extreme things like the main characters falling into the Underworld or Percy’ s friend being trapped by a goddess. Rick Riordan always leaves a hook at the end of his story so you will want to read the next book. I would give this book 9 out of 10 because it seems to be too confusing in the beginning, but then it gets better. I would suggest this book to a 6th or 7th grader because it is pretty complicated.
Book Review: Through the Looking Glass by Lewis Carroll
Ilana Nazari
In this companion novel to Alice’ s Adventures in Wonderland, Alice finds herself on an adventure once again. This time, her adventure follows the format of a game of chess. Although this book can be confusing at some points, the reader can always persevere. Carroll has written a must-read book. Magical, brilliant, and overall wonderful, this is a book that will be read for generations to come. Up for a challenge? Then pick up this book.
