“ But you should be,” said a low voice. Maddie’ s scream echoed through the house, just as Angela’ s had. Her cold body landed on the floor with another sickening thud. Zoe turned on her tiny flashlight.“ Maddie? Angela?” she said.“ We’ re in the basement!” giggled a voice identical to Maddie’ s.“ Come on down!” said Angela. Zoe knew that something wasn’ t right about this, and yet she made her way slowly to the basement. She had just stepped onto the staircase that led to it, when the door behind her slammed shut. She pounded her fists on it and screamed for help. She tried jiggling the knob, but gave up in frustration. She slumped down against the door. Then as she looked up she saw that the door knob had continued to rattle and jiggle by itself. Screaming, she sprinted to the bottom of the staircase. When she got to the bottom, she found that the floor was covered in a thin layer of water. Stupid pump never works. She thought. A cool breeze was circulating through the basement. Zoe wrinkled her nose at the moldy smell. Not wanting to be by the door, she walked through the steadily rising water towards the main room. The only sound in the house were her feet splashing in the water. Splish, splash. Splish. Then an echo, Splash, splish. Zoe froze. Those weren’ t her footsteps. She stood perfectly still. Waiting. Listening. Then, splish splash. Louder. Closer! She frantically ran towards the couch and ducked down behind it. She listened. All was silent. Whomever, or whatever, that was following her had gone. She looked up from her hiding space, to find herself gazing into blood red eyes inches away from her own.
“ Hello.” he said. She let out a long, terrified scream. He clasped his long black hands around her throat, and lifted her off the ground. Zoe squirmed and kicked but it was of no use. A sinister, fanged smile stretched across his face.
“ Why so scared, girl?” he said cooly, tightening his grasp as he spoke. Her face was turning blue. She was a goner. Zoe’ s mind flashed to the flashlight in her hand. She flipped it on and shined it’ s vibrant rays right into his face. He let out a long wail.
“ No!” he screamed. His skin began to bubble and fizz. The black hands melted away from her neck, and Zoe fell to the ground. The puddle of blackness drifted away into the surrounding water. The sound of a garage door rattled overhead. Zoe sprung up from the ground, and rushed to her parents. Her skin still white as snow and her body trembling.
In the dead of the night, a transformation began on the ceiling of the basement. Two blood red eyes and a sinister smile appeared.
