What's Happening?

By Sarah Smith

The world is a crazy, humongous place, and crazy, humongous things happen every day. It’s hard to keep track of what’s going on, and how one event can affect another, especially if it’s a controversial issue, with two sides saying completely different things. Here are a few things I’d like to point out to you:

1. Right now, America is in deep, deep debt. How much debt? Oh, just over $17 trillion. No big deal.

Just kidding, that’s totally a big deal (If you want to have a panic attack, go to usadebtclock.com ).

Now, somebody has to pay off all of that money, right, but whom? Not the government, sadly; the government can only take money from one person and give it to another. They don’t earn money. No, you and me, and every citizen of America, will have to foot the bill for this ludicracy by paying lots and lots of taxes. This affects you and me heavily, because, even though I haven’t graduated high school, and I don’t even have a job, the government’s spending has put me, and you, and every citizen $54, 314.38 in debt. To make matters worse, the House just passed a bill to remove the debt ceiling. What does that mean? That means that the government basically has a blank check now, and they can throw what tiny scrap of caution they had left to the wind.

2. Texas has, once again, been named by Forbes as the number one state for job growth. Congratulations, Texas!

3. The Washington Redskins (about which I honestly know nothing, because I hate sports) are under attack because their team’s name is, apparently, offensive to Indians. Now, lawmakers are getting involved. Will they actually give in to the pressure and change their name, or will they stick to their tradition?

P.S. My dad and I sent off the form to register me to vote! Woo hoo!
