“ I started my blog lochnation. com and hosted“ Off The Wall with Dan & Lo” a radio show with my friend Dan on Zimbabwe’ s first privately owned radio station, ZiFM Stereo. Our main focus was to promote and increase the visibility of Zim artists and introduce new music and news to the airwaves and it was an experience I really enjoyed!”
Through her work in the industry she has had the honor of being featured on the cover of Zim’ s leading women’ s lifestyle magazines, namely Jewel Magazine, INDUNA, Diva’ s Inc and Expose Magazine. Her current work with Moto Republik focuses on creating platforms that promote entrepreneurship, industry development and the freedom of expression through the arts.
Being a woman is my super power. We are the world’ s natural born creators and I think that’ s a truly beautiful thing she responds when asked what it means to be a woman.” I am proud to be a woman, there’ s so much we’ ve had to fight for and there is so much we have achieved.” Lorraine believes women are also the beacons of society.
If you look through history carefully you will see many uncelebrated women sparking positive changes and standing up for what is right, Mother Teresa, Aung Sang, Suu Kyi. Even today we have examples of Zimbabwe women making contributions to the world Dambiso Moyo, Taponeswa Mavunga, Fadzayi Mahere, Danai Gururira and many more boss women who are killing it in their respective fields and making room for us.
The 21st century woman is beautiful and amazing in her versatility. Who we are and can be as women has not changed, we have always been incredible and able. Only thing that has changed is the times. In this day and age women can be and do anything we want to, largely thanks to the brave, intelligent and tireless efforts of the women that came before us. It’ s very exciting waking up every day and to good news of another woman’ s accomplishments and seeing women filling new roles and rising up the ranks.
There is much that has been accomplished and much still to conquer and watching this happen and being a part of it is a wonderful thing.
Lorraine is involved in women empowerment initiatives and she says“ We have a monthly meet- up called # WomenCreativeWednesday. It is a platform I started about a year ago at Moto Republik. The idea was to have an informal platform where young women in the creative industry can meet, network and connect. There is a quote that says“ Be who you needed when you were younger”. I remember when I was younger I couldn’ t imagine what I am doing now. I didn’ t know that there were careers in this sector that went beyond singing and painting. I believe If I knew that there was a plethora of credible and powerful careers in this sector I would have been encouraged to start paving my away a lot earlier.
The arts sector in Zimbabwe is still in development and in order for it to grow we need many roles to be filled. I believe the conversation around development is null and void without engaging and promoting women. The sector needs more women doing the things and I hope that platforms like # WomenCreativeWednesday will contribute to that.
Of course we can see the strides she has made in her career and she says my career has been progressing slowly but surely. I entered the industry with a strategic approach and as I have been making my way the path has been both organic but intentional. I wanted to go from being a vehicle to creating the vehicle and the road on which it travels. I like to believe I’ m working steadily towards thatOn being one of Zimbabwe’ s power women?
I ' m flattered and humbled to even be thought of in that conversation, however i don ' t know if I ' m quite there yet. What I do know is that I am beyond proud to be a Zimbabwean woman and the power in that one fact, fuels me everyday.
