Farming a little piece of heaven Goats, bees and organic farming build an oasis in Spencer Brook Township

Nestled into the rural neighborhoods of Spencer Brook Township is a small oasis of a hobby farm.
Peace of Heaven Farm is home to a number of honey bees, chickens, Nigerian Dwarf goats and multiple garden beds with vibrant displays of flowers and vegetables.
Kathy Roy and her partner purchased the property 30 years ago and switched to rural farm life after years of living in the Twin Cities.
Roy spent her career as an educator working for a number of Christian schools before retiring and building a quieter life for herself.
She has since dedicated her life to her little piece of heaven, falling in love with goats along the way.
“ The love of animals was a big factor,” Roy said.“ I always had an interest in goats, and I got in touch with someone that sold the Nigerian Dwarf goats and I really liked them.”
As she built her herd, Roy quickly came to love the animals and now thinks of them as members of her family.
Nigerian Dwarf Goats are approximately half the size of the average goat, and thus also produce less volumes of milk which can be more manageable for smaller farms. Their size can also make them easier to manage.
“ Their milk is wonderful,” Roy added.“ It’ s high in butter fat which is really good for making cheese.”
