before we started building on it,” Sara Rutten said.“ It was a cornfield when we bought it. With organic practices, you have to not have any chemicals on the land for three years before you can be certified organic. It’ s been really fun to see how it’ s progressed when it came from nothing.”
Making sure the homestead utilized organic practices was a vital component for the Ruttens.
“ We are a fully organic practice farm. So, no chemicals, no pesticides, no anything,” Rutten added.“ All of our beef and lamb are grass fed, and we have heritage pork that is fed organic green on pasture.”
Outside of their beef, lamb and pork, the 100 Acre Homestead is home to a plethora of animals in all shapes and sizes. From llamas, to alpacas, to chickens, even some mini donkeys, highland cows, turkey and geese.
“ We have a lot of animals,” Rutten joked.“ Pretty much every( farm) animal you can think of. We really truly love all of our animals, whether they’ re here to fuel our bodies or they’ re our pets.”
But the 100 Acre Homestead is most well-known for its fall festival occupying four Saturdays during the season with music, activities and their food trunk, The Honey Pot.
The idea for The Honey Pot was born from the homestead’ s first fall festival after the Ruttens hired outside vendors to serve their food offering products that didn’ t match their organic vision.
“ There was a huge disconnect for me,” Rutten said.“ If you came here and you saw everything, the work we were putting into it and the way the animals were raised, and you saw a food truck serving corn dogs, it just didn’ t line up with my vision.”
The Honey Pot serves food sourced directly from the 100 Acre Homestead and other area farms. All of its baked goods are also made from scratch on the homestead with organic ingredients.
“ I thought how cool it would be for people to come and see the life that these animals are given here, and know that that is the clean, organic food that is served to them,” Rutten said.
The food truck’ s name was inspired by the homestead’ s honey bees as a way to tie all aspects of the farm together.
The farm’ s community focused events and its food truck both stem from the Rutten’ s mission to bring families back together.
Sara, Jim and Henry Rutten are the faces behind Princeton’ s 100 Acre Homestead. A farm focused on organic practices and providing the community with a place to escape everyday life.
