Religion and science compete in many ways to describe reality - they both make
"existence claims" about what is real - but they use different tools to meet this goal.
In his elegant, provocative, and direct argument, leading evolutionary biologist and
bestselling author Jerry Coyne lays out in clear, patient, dispassionate details why
the toolkit of science, based on reason and empirical study, is reliable, while that of
religion - including faith, dogma and revelation - is unreliable and leads to incorrect,
untestable, or conflicting conclusions. Indeed, by relying on faith, religion renders
itself incapable of finding truth.
Perhaps the most interesting, (the word was chosen to avoid accusations of
pejorative bias) observation is the contention that religion and science are
incompatible, because, by surveying the history of science and stating that both
religion and science make claims about the universe, only science is open to
the possibility that it may be wrong!

An INVITATION to play in the annual golf competition for the Primus’ Cup.
There are several changes to the programme this year.
It will be on a Monday – 13th May.
(I think it has been a disadvantage rather than helpful to have linked it to the General
Synod week in the past – and I hope Monday is still a good day for clergy to get
away).
You do not need an official
handicap to enter (We will
accept your valuation of your
ability and give 24 to those who
rarely break 100!)
The following format will be
followed:
Arrive 10:00 am – 10:30 am
Coffee/Tea/filled roll.
Draw for teams of 3 from 3 pots
of low, middle and high
handicaps).
11:00 am Shot-gun start for a
9-hole Texas scramble – that is
each team starts from a different hole, all 3 drive, choose the best drive, all hit a shot
from there, choose the best, all hit 3rd shot from there and continue in this way till the
ball is holed.
It’s fun, with no pressure - good for the occasional golfer.
