Marvel Comics: The Avengers

By: Sydney Niziol

The Avengers have traveled through generations exploring different ideas and writers. The Avengers first appeared in The Avengers #1 (Sept. 1963), they were created primarily by writer/editor Stan Lee and co-plotter Jack Kirby. This series was published bi-monthly until issue #6 (July 1964) then it ran monthly up to issue #402 (Sept. 1996).

Including some spinoffs such as several annuals, miniseries and a sister series that ran shortly during the mid-1970s.

All of the then current Avengers series (The Mighty Avengers, New Avengers, Dark Avengers and Avengers: The Initiative) were canceled. A new ongoing series called Avengers opened to the public during May 2010. The writers and artists of the newest series are Brian Michael Bendis and John Romita.

The full cast or roster of Avengers is, Thor, Hawkeye, Spiderman, Wolverine, Capitan America, Spiderwoman, Ironman and the leader of the world’s greatest heroes, Maria Hill. The launch set the beginning of the “Heroic Age”. The name signified the end of a seven year train of grim and surprising story line.

The characters from the comics clash slightly with the newly released movie, but the movies seem to be continuing further. You never know, they just might catch up to the cast in the comics. The Avengers are and always have been one of the greatest bands of superheroes, and they will continue to be.
