HOPE HESSELTINE
What Kind of Packaging Material
Provides the Most Protection?
!
In my science fair
project, the purpose was to
find out what kind of
packaging material is the
most protective when
mailing delicate objects.
!
I used the materials:
styrofoam sheets, bubble
wrap, and tissue paper. I
dropped an egg from about
eight feet off the ground in
one of the materials that I
was using. I had three trials
to figure out the final
answer.
!
The materials that
you will need to complete
this project is: 9 eggs,
styrofoam sheets, bubble
wrap, and tissue paper. You
will also need three small
boxes to drop the eggs.
!
My hypothesis is that
I think that the bubble wrap
will protect the egg the most
because it is often used to
send delicate materials.
!
The dependent
material is what will be
measured or tested. I am
testing what kind of
packaging material is the
most protective. The
independent variable is
what will effect my
dependent material. The
independent variable is my
materials.
The controlled
variables are what you kept
the same. The things I kept
the same is: I used the
same kind of boxes, I used
the same kind of eggs, and I
used the same kind of
bubble wrap, tissue paper,
and styrofoam, for each
trail.
!
My results were, with
the styrofoam, the eggs
broke twice and didnʼt break
once. The tissue paper
wrapped eggs broke all
three times. For the bubble
wrap it broke once and
didnʼt break the two other
times we dropped the eggs.
!
In conclusion, the
data supported my
hypothesis. I predicted that
the bubble wrap would
provide the most protection
when mailing delicate
objects, and my hypothesis
was correct.
