-later known as oxygen.
He obtained it by heating
‘mercury rust’ and saw
that in it a candle burned
brighter. 1820 birth of John
Tyndall, Irish physicist,
who demonstrated
why the sky is blue and
made many inventions
including a light pipe
that led to modern fibre
optics.

Japan. Three days later
a plutonium bomb was
