• Cage( retainer): Maintains spacing between rolling elements and prevents mutual contact
Each component must meet stringent dimensional, surface finish, and metallurgical requirements to ensure bearing performance and longevity.
Component manufacturing, heat treatment, assembly Manufacturing martensitic stainless steel bearings involves producing individual components- inner and outer rings, balls, and cages- followed by assembly and comprehensive inspection. Rings and balls are typically produced from tube or bar stock, which undergoes rigorous incoming inspection before cutting, forging, and machining to near-net shape. A critical step is heat treatment to develop the martensitic microstructure. Components are austenitised at approximately 950- 1100 ° C, followed by rapid quenching, typically in oil, to transform austenite into hard martensite. Subsequent tempering optimises the balance between hardness, toughness, and dimensional stability. Final grinding and polishing produce the precise geometry and surface finish required for rolling contact applications.
Ball bearings in ship winches are used to reduce friction, handle both radial and axial( thrust) loads, and ensure smooth, efficient rotation of moving parts, particularly in deck machinery and sailboat winches. Photo: Dreamstime.
Conclusion AISI 440C martensitic stainless steel bearings represent an optimal solution for applications requiring a combination of high hardness, wear resistance, load-bearing capability, and corrosion resistance. While their corrosion resistance is lower than that of austenitic stainless steels such as 304 or 316, 440C bearings offer far superior mechanical performance and significantly improved corrosion resistance compared to standard chrome steel bearings. As a result, 440C stainless steel bearings are widely used in demanding environments across the food processing, medical and surgical, marine, aerospace, chemical processing, semiconductor, textile, and precision instrument industries where reliability, cleanliness, and performance under harsh operating conditions are nonnegotiable.
