Duplex stainless steel incorporated During the early years, the original vision was respected. However, the outbreak of the Civil War and a fire that destroyed Gaudí’ s models and plans greatly complicated its continuity. To achieve rapid progress in the construction of the towers, a modular solution was sought, made possible by the evolution of materials and the emergence of new construction technologies. Thus, around 2008, stainless steel was incorporated into this monumental project as the skeleton of the towers. Since then, the Acerinox Group has manufactured and supplied various batches, including a large quantity of reinforcing bars( rebars) produced by Roldan S. A. The type of stainless steel selected by the project team was Duplex 2205, which provides the corrosion resistance and lightness required for the large modules that make up the four Towers of the Evangelists( 135 meters high), the Tower of the Virgin Mary( 140 meters), and the giant central tower, known as the Tower of Jesus Christ, with a height of 172.5 meters.
Stainless takes the strain In addition to forming the substructure of the tower modules, stainless steel has been used in numerous load-bearing elements: welded beams for the pillars, stone arris supports, the stressing heads of the panels, and slab reinforcements. Following the titanic efforts to finalise its construction, it is vital to ensure the durability of this World Heritage Site; hence, the importance of selecting materials that can withstand the passage of time under the city of Barcelona’ s environmental conditions. Extending the service life of constructions is one of the primary advantages of using stainless steel. Incorporating it into the most critical parts and the most demanding designs is the key to success, especially when dealing with buildings of incalculable heritage value. Sometimes, the durability of a structure depends on what is hidden underneath. Within the framework of the Basilica’ s construction, the Acerinox Group is collaborating with the Construction Board of the Expiatory Temple of the Sagrada Familia.
The recent placement of the cross atop the central tower of the Sagrada Família marks a defining moment in the cathedral’ s final ascent, signalling that its tallest and most symbolic element has reached its intended height. The cross is not only an architectural and spiritual focal point, but also a feat of modern engineering. To withstand Barcelona’ s coastal environment and the structural demands at such elevation, duplex stainless steel has been used within critical components, providing a combination of high strength, reduced weight, and superior corrosion resistance.
Gaudí’ s organic, original, and unique style incorporates natural forms into his design.
