Stainless steel is used in numerous load-bearing elements, including welded beams for the pillars and stone arris supports e. g. where vaulting ribs meet.
The Expiatory Temple of the Sagrada Familia is dedicated to the Christian faith. In this monumental work, Antoni Gaudí reached the artistic fullness he had developed throughout his professional career, turning it into the greatest exponent of Modernist architecture. Construction of the temple began in 1882 under the direction of the diocesan architect, Francisco de Paula del Villar. However, only one year later, it was assigned to Gaudí. Initially, he balanced it with other commissions, but from 1914 onwards, the architect dedicated himself exclusively to the temple. The cathedral maintains Gaudí’ s organic, original, and unique style, which incorporates natural forms into his designs. Numerous artisans, sculptors, and artists have participated in its construction due to the extremely high degree of ornamentation. This is not to mention the many architects who, following Gaudí’ s untimely death, have taken charge of the works.
“ The expiatory church of La Sagrada Familia is made by the people and is mirrored in them. It is a work that is in the hands of God and the will of the people.”
– Antonio Gaudi, 1852-1926
