Nickel & LNG

Special Focus Update

A meteoric find are spread throughout the alloy to enhance its strength , withstanding harsher conditions before reaching their breaking points . “ This new alloy is a major achievement ,” says Dale Hopkins , deputy project manager of NASA ’ s Transformational Tools and Technologies project .
SBM Offshore : Guyana FPSO
A team from the UK ’ s University of Cambridge , working with colleagues in Austria , has found a new way to make a possible replacement for rare-earth magnets : tetrataenite , a ‘ cosmic magnet ’ that takes millions of years to develop naturally in meteorites . Professor Lindsay Greer explains “ synthetic tetrataenite off ers the potential of rare-earthfree permanent magnets made from the elements nickel , iron and phosphorus , which are found in abundance in the Earth ’ s crust and thus avoids the need to extract a huge amount of material to get a small volume of rare earths . The addition of phosphorus enables tetrataenite to be produced within seconds .” This could play an important role in low-carbon technologies , such as high-performance permanent magnets used in EVs .
New alloy blasts off
SBM Offshore has been awarded contracts to perform frontend engineering and design ( FEED ) for a floating production , storage and offloading vessel ( FPSO ) for ExxonMobil ’ s Whiptail development project in Guyana . Whiptail is ExxonMobil ’ s sixth offshore project in Guyana and SBM Offshore ’ s fifth FPSO project for the US supermajor in the country . SBM Offshore will design and build the unit using its seventh newbuild , multipurpose floater hull , combined with several standardised topsides modules . The FPSO will be designed to produce 250,000 bopd , will have associated gas treatment capacity of 540 mcfpd and water injection capacity of 300,000 bpd . The vessel will be spread moored in water depth of about 1,630 m and will be able to store around 2m barrels of crude oil .
Harland & Wolff FPSO contract
A team of innovators from NASA and Ohio State University have demonstrated a major breakthrough ; a new 3D printable alloy for extreme environments . Called GRX-810 , it is composed of nickel , cobalt and chromium . It could lead to stronger , more durable parts inside aircraft and spacecraft engines . Termed a “ nanoscale oxide dispersion strengthened ( ODS ) alloy ,” GRX810 can withstand temperatures over 1,080 ° C ( 2,000 ° F ). Tiny particles containing oxygen atoms
Harland & Wolff has been awarded a GBP 61m base contract to deliver the mid-life upgrade contract of the SeaRose Floating Production Storage and Offloading ( FPSO ) vessel . The contract is with Cenovus Energy . The vessel is expected to arrive at the company ’ s Belfast Yard in early 2024 and will be in the Building Dock for over three months .
