Notes from the Head Coach
By
John Farmiloe
Welcome to our first game magazine of the 2014 BAFANL season. We are kicking off the new
season against our old rivals, the Chester Romans, who we first played in 1996. Our games
with the Romans are always competitive and the Surge has been looking forward to playing
last years Midland Conference champions.
In 1993 after the demise of the Stoke Spitfires, five of their former players travelled to
Chester every Sunday to continue playing. During those journeys we started to talk about the
possibility of starting a new team in Stoke. At the end of the season we proposed to Chester
having a game with a scratch team made up of former Spitfire players. The success of this
game gave us the impetus to form a new club, the Staffordshire Surge, which has now played
twenty seasons in British American Football.
With the growth in polarity of the sport in Britain, the Staffordshire Surge is aiming to get
more people into American football. New players and supporters are welcome to join us and
if you want to get involved please contact us.
The Surge’s preparations for this season have seen the club make great progress in its
management, facilities, recruitment, coaching and training. This has been due to the
commitment of all those involved in striving to improve our club. We now look forward to
another season of this exciting team sport.
Regards,
John Farmiloe
