Social media too
social for learners
Social media expert Emma
Sadleir recently discussed
the risks and abuse of social
platforms. Her main message
was that digital content is
dangerous content, especially as
people are inclined to overshare
on these platforms. Ms Sadlier
discussed the different risks as
well as the fact that so many
people – especially teenagers and
children - have misconceptions
as regards these risks.
She emphasised that the
first rule of social media is
that there is no such thing as
a ‘free lunch’.Signing up to a
free social media platform such
as Instagram and Snapchat,
we unknowingly give them full
rights to use our social media
content as they wish. Ms Sadleir
also recommends that before you
post something online, make
sure that it is not too personal
for social media.
Ms Sadleir, who has four
law degrees and deals with many
cases involving cyber bullying,
states that the catch is that not
only the bully is punished but
also the people who witnessed
it and did nothing to stop it.
For example, if you are part of
a WhatsApp group and there is
a case of bullying committed by
someone in the group, you will
also be punished even if you
did not contribute to the act of
bullying at all.
South Africa’s criminal
capacity is 10. That means
that 10- year- old can be held
responsible for his/her own
actions and can be criminally
charged. She emphasizes the
importance of using social media
platforms safely and to always
stay up to date, as the platforms
change at a very fast pace.

so, wonder almal presies wat gebou
word.

spasie. Dit is duidelik te siene aan
die feit dat verskeie onderwysers
hul klasse in onwaarskynlike plekke
moet aanbied, soos byvoorbeeld die
pawiljoen, die biblioteek en ook in
die koshuis saal. Dit was vir ‘n kort
rukkie ‘n oplossing maar is uiteraard
nie ideaal is nie.
Volgens Mnr Pieter Wessels,
sal twee van die klaskamers vir
IGO en Tegnologie onderskeidelik
gebruik word, terwyl die ander twee
klaskamers vir Mnr Casling en me
Van der Merwe se gebruik geoormerk
is.
Mnr Van der Walt en Mnr Van
Rooyen sal dan vanaf die S-blok na
die nuwe klaskamers skuif, vir IGO
en Tegnologie en Mnr Seekane en
Mnr Matsoele sal dan in die vakante
S-blok klaskamers inskuif.
Die beraamde tydperk vir
voltooiing van die konstruksie, is
middel April maar die klasse sal eers
in gebruik geneem kan word, sodra
die korrekte meubels, hulpmiddels
en tegnologie geïnstalleer is. Die
totale verskuiwings proses behoort
dus teen die einde van April 2019
voltooi te wees.

2014 matric receives Rhodes Scholarship Mnr Wessel Wessels leef voluit
Nkahiseng Ralepeli matriculated
in 2014. In 2018 he was the proud
recipient of a Rhodes Scholarship. As
a learner, he had a focussed interest
in politics and related fields. This
formidable debater was part of a
group of four Grey debaters who
travelled to the Czech Republic to
partake in a debating tournament.
He went on to study Law at the
UFS and completed his LLB-degree
in 2018. However, his drive for
futher studies never abated and in
answer to this desire, Nkahiseng
was awarded a Rhodes Scholarship.
He was also awarded an Abe Bailey
Bursary earlier in his studies.
At university he used debating
as a platform to address social
issues in South Africa. He has
represented the UFS at various
debating tournaments such as Mnr Wessels is in Bloemfontein
gebore en getoë. Hy begin sy
skoolloopbaan op Sand du Plessis
en voltooi graad 10 tot 12 aan
die Hoërskool Diamantveld op
Kimberley.
Op skool is hy ‘n kranige
sportman en neem deel aan rugby,
krieket en tennis en boks vir die
Vrystaat.
Van kleins af het hy al skool-
skool begin speel met sy niggies en
nefies, met hom as onderwyser en
die familie as die leerders. Dit was
dus geen verrassing toe hy onderwys
gaan studeer het aan die Universiteit
van die Vrystaat nie.
Hy begin sy onderwysloopbaan
in Oos-Londen waar hy vir 13 jaar
by Hoërskool Rex skoolhou. Daarna
het hy vir 21 jare by Navalsig in
Bloemfontein skoolgehou en vir twee
the World Universities Debating
Championships. Nkahiseng will be
leaving for Oxford University in the
UK in September this year to further
his legal studies.

jaar by die Academy of Excellence, ‘n
privaatskool in Bloemfontein. Grey
se aanbod was toe vir hom perfek.
In 2019 sluit hy aan by
die Grey-familie, waar sy pligte
Afrikaans-onderrig en na-skoolse
betrokkenheid by rugby en krieket
insluit. Hy het mnr André Bester
se plek as Afrikaans-onderwyser
ingeneem
Mnr. Wessels is ‘n gesinsman
kleinkind is.

A legend in his time departs for greener pastures and Phalaborwa’s extreme heat
Mr Johan Human, a stalwart in the
Physics department has decided that
after 13 years in the service of Grey
College, the time has come for him
to explore other avenues. He will be
leaving Grey College at the end of
April to pursue his physiotherapy
career. This soft-spoken, patient
teacher carved his name on the walls
of greatness in his time as Physics
teacher and many learners attest to
the level of understanding they were
able to reach under his tuition.
Mr Human did not limit himself
to teaching Physics to high school
learners; he resigned after his first
four-year stint of teaching in order
to qualify as a physiotherapist. This
completed, he was again appointed
at Grey while also conducting a
private physiotherapy practice. He
also coached high jump and travelled
overseas on several occasions to
accompany athletes in his care;
notably, he also accompanied Wade
van Niekerk overseas.
He obtained his Master’s degree
in physiotherapy while also teaching
2
and working in his practice – an
indication of his unyielding work
ethic and determination not to
stagnate. This is also why, when
the opportunity presented itself,
Mr Human decided to establish
his own physiotherapy practice in
Phalaborwa. In answer to a comment
about his move to a very hot part of
South Africa, he observed that the
recent hot summer and drought
prepared him for the move to
Phalaborwa.
In his very limited free time,
Mr Human expresses his creativity
in painting. He is a passionate
wildlife photographer and cites this
as another good reason to uproot
and move to where photography
opportunities are probably more
accessible.
This very talented and
intelligent man will undoubtedly
make a success of his new beginning.
His leaving will leave an enormous
gap, but his legacy will undoubtedly
remain.
