Vestry Notes
he latest meeting of the Vestry was held on May 5 th. The most
important piece of news was that we have succeeded in buying a
house at 12 Mary Slessor Wynd, which is either in High Burnside or
Rutherglen depending upon how you read the map, to serve as a rectory for
St Oswald’s.
T
This is nearly 3 miles from the church but St Oswald’s serves a wide area,
including Burnside, Rutherglen and Castlemilk as well as Kings Park itself
and Croftfoot and Cathcart. Clearly, a Priest-in Charge cannot live in all parts
of the parish at once.
Provided that he, or in the immediate future she, has a car all should be well.
Buying the house has, obviously, depleted our finances somewhat. However
we heard at the meeting that Margaret Robinson, who was a long-serving
member of the choir and the Vestry and who died last year, has left the
church a substantial legacy in her will for which we are very grateful.
On the property front, I had hoped that by now the light bulbs in the church
would have been replaced by LED ones. However the electrician who was
supposed to be doing this first postponed an appointment and then didn’t
turn up at all on the second agreed date. The fact that I waited for him for an
hour and then went home to find a message on the phone saying that he had
passed the job on to someone else, the message having been left at 9:55
when he was supposed to be at the church at 9:30, meant that I did not
arrive at the Vestry meeting that evening in the best of moods.
Fortunately, Canon Scott Robertson volunteered to put us in touch with
another electrician who had done work for St Margaret’s. With luck we may
have new lights by the time of Lesley-ann Craddock’s Institution on August
29th.
Canon Robertson also promised to give us details of an electronic device to
replace the organ while we are without an organist. This is said to be easy to
operate and not too expensive. Meanwhile we are grateful to Anne Cowan
for playing the organ for us when her other commitments make this possible.
I think 14th June will be her next appearance and she is definitely booked to
play for the Institution.
