Social Justice & Environment
St Margaret’s members (and any other interested people) are very welcome, indeed
encouraged, to participate in a joint Social Justice & Environment group organised by
Holy Cross. Here are extracts from the minutes of the group’s meeting on 11 June
2018:
“Members will be sent an email with a chapter from the book ‘A Climate of Justice,
Loving your neighbour in a Warming World‘ by Mick Pope. Each of us are to write our
impressions and anything which spoke to us and bring it to the next meeting.
The DVD of the movie ‘Blue’ was purchased for the group with the intention of
disseminating it as widely as possible. It is to be passed around the two congrega-
tions. Also, it is hoped that groups like the youth group may also use it as a discussion
starter. It tells us about the state of our oceans and gives practical suggestions about
how we can do something about it.
Toni Hassan has been thinking of starting a book discussion on Social Justice and
Environment in the Christian context. We thought we would ask her to come and tell
us about it at one of our meetings.
Kirsty has a box of goods for sale which are aids to environmental living. It would be
good to have set times when they are available to buy, so the congregations will be
prepared (for example, 1st Sunday of the month) We may need to sort out a roster for
the selling of these items.
Barbara spoke about workshops at City Uniting Church on attaining zero waste. She
will let us know when the next workshop is on. We are all encouraged to disseminate
information about environmental and social justice events, perhaps via email, so we
can attend if we would like.
There is a TV programme starting soon called ‘War on Waste’ which may be worth
watching and looking out for.
We spoke about the use of beeswax cloth wraps which can be used instead of plastic
wraps. Trish will look to ways we can make them ourselves, which she will share with
the group.
The next meeting will be Monday August 6 at the home of Trish and Richard
Stoddart.”
Trish Stoddart and Barbara Burns would be happy to provide more information about
the group and its activities.
