to death. They don’ t want me to be here. They would have helped me out of here. But I think this happened to me for a reason, so I’ m going to take advantage of it. I want to really see where this is going to take me; I learned so much in the process of being in the system for the eight or nine months that I’ ve been here, that I really could take that and do something with it. I have so much built up in my heart about this program because I’ ve been through it. I know. It’ s not like something you read about in some book. I’ ve been there.

St. James’ Overnight Shelter Ministry offers a light meal and safe lodgings for twelve homeless men, six nights a week, in partnership with Madison Avenue Presbyterian Church. Our ministry is entirely dependent on volunteers. An early shift welcomes our guests and serves them a light meal; a second shift stays overnight. Please contact Susana Ferrer to learn more about how you might grow closer to Christ by serving those who seek homes of their own.
Dethroning Mammon
READING LIST RECOMMENDATION
The Rev. Ryan Fleenor Vicar
When Justin Welby became Archbishop of Canterbury in 2013, he became the first former oil company executive to serve as the spiritual leader of the worldwide Anglican Communion. Perhaps it’ s not surprising, then, that his first full-length book as Archbishop explores the subject of money and materialism. Published as the 2017 Lent book for the Church of England, Dethroning Mammon asks Christians to reflect on the power of money in our lives( what he calls“ Mammon’ s expectations” and the“ ethics of scarcity”), and how we can instead use our money as an expression of our faith and trust in the abundance and grace of God. The end result is a thoughtful and thought-provoking book. In six short and accessible chapters, Welby deftly weaves together Scripture, personal experience, reflection on contemporary economics, and questions for personal or group reflection. His goal is to help us better integrate our financial lives with our life of faith, taking money as seriously as Jesus did and daring to live by the kind of“ divine economics” Jesus modeled for us. I found Welby’ s book wise and helpful, and would recommend it to anyone looking for a next step in considering these questions for themselves.
