Stillwater Area Public Schools District has a long and proud tradition of high expectations and outstanding achievement , hence their motto , “ Expect more .”
As the oldest school district in the state , Stillwater has established a tradition of excellence .
District students consistently rank high on state and national tests , and most graduates will attend a two- to four-year college . Many students are exceptional musicians and accomplished athletes , often winning state and national competitions .
The district is updating their challenging curriculum so it continues to meet and exceed state and federal standards , and it offers unique programs to inspire and motivate its more than 8,000 students .
Since the 2017-2018 school year , preschool is available at all seven elementary schools , and the sixth- to eighth-grade students transitioned

to middle schools . Ninth-graders moved to the high school , where they have access to 140 courses and more than 50 clubs and activities .
Residents of the district approved a $ 175 million bond in November 2023 so that the district can replace its two oldest elementary schools , Lake Elmo and Andersen , both of which are over 100 years old and have met or are approaching their maximum student capacity . The bond will also be used to expand Oak-Land Middle School , as the southern portion of the district is growing , and to improve security measures district-wide .
Stretching 30 miles along the St . Croix River , ISD 834 serves the communities of Afton , Bayport , Baytown Township , Grant , Hugo ,
Lake Elmo , Lakeland , Lakeland Shores , Lake St . Croix Beach , Marine on St . Croix , May Township , Oak Park Heights , St . Mary ’ s Point , Stillwater , Stillwater Township , West Lakeland Township , Withrow and Woodbury .
