County services located in Stillwater
As one of the original nine counties in Minnesota , Washington County has a long history of serving its residents .
The county spans 423 square miles of land and encompasses 468 lakes of 10 acres or more in area . More than 267,000 citizens reside in Washington County .
According to the National Research Center / Polco , who conduct surveys in counties and cities across the nation , Washington County residents report that they enjoy a higher quality of life than those in most other counties across the nation .
The government center in Stillwater offers a variety of services . In addition to keeping records and providing taxpayer services , the center provides public health and environmental services , community services and veterans services . It houses the offices of the sheriff , county attorney and county assessor .

related to adoption , aging , child abuse or neglect , child care or support , chemical dependency , developmental disabilities , employment or financial assistance , medical assistance , and mental health . The county is in the process of partnering with the city of Stillwater to create emergency housing , giving temporary homes to those needing extensive county services to get back on their feet .
The Stillwater License Center in the Valley Ridge Mall is a convenient place for residents to renew drivers licenses , obtain marriage licenses , pay property taxes , get park permits and more .
Commissioners on the Washington County Board meet at the government center at 9 a . m . most Tuesdays .
One commissioner from each of the county ’ s five districts is elected to serve a four-year term . Stillwater , Bayport , Lake Elmo , and Oak Park Heights are in District 3 .
