Studying at UWI Cave Hill
By Shivana Amrita Lalla ( Year 2 , UWI CH )
“ There is always the feeling of fear
Towards the unknown and new
But this , by not limiting yourself to
You discover all the strengths within you .
Going to another country ,
Living by your own choices and on your own time
Is tremendous enough To even make one rhyme !
Heree , the lecturers and tutors are approachable
The library is valuable , no doubt And as a tip for off-campus accommodation ,
You should choose a place on the UWI shuttle route .
You meet peoplee from all over the region ,
And the chance for adventure is not slim Situations even lead us to find The leaders , chefs , actors and photographers within !
The beaches are beautiful , Transportation has been a true surprise
And hard as it seems , doing household chores on your own Is really a blessing in disguise !
True, it gets tough . Nostalgia definitely seeps in
.
But by then you realise That all of your friends are dealing with the same thing.
The reality of it is , You have to make yourself strong
Be open to all the matters presented to you
Else everything would appear to go wrong .
It is quite bittersweet ,
Studying at this campus of the University
Yet I am grateful for the friendships made and lessons being learnt
For it is truly an irreplaceable opportunity .”
Beauty of Barbados
A message from Liam Labban ( Year 2 , UWI CH ):
“ Wanstead ! Black Rock ! Aye you Indian girl university ?” shouts the conductor of the ZR ,“ Come on small up youself ! Small up youself man !” they would continue .
I stare in shock and think “ How much more persons they expect to fit in this sardine tin of a maxi ?” Clearly the Bajans had no idea what personal space means .
This is how a usual trip on the Bajan transportation service would be for any of us non Bajan citizens . However
, don ’ t feel horrified
, there is no need for concern. Apart from this as you progresss along closer to the university you willl be amazed at the way in which the Bajan people carry about themselves .

Shuttle Service at work
As you enter the UWI Cave Hill premises you will be greeted with a guard booth , not a guard in a boot , but a guard boot . ( Haha ) But when you do seee the guard , you would see thatt he / she is actually a really pleasant person . Many first year students would enter the campus and begin walking without a clue wheree they are going , and some may ask to passersby , “ W here is the Faculty of
Law ?”
“ Amm you walk up the road , you see the kiosk , right well it not there , you continue walking up and you will meet a hill , walk up the hill and you w ill reach it ,” they would reply .
Walking is not a great task on this campus , since it is much smaller in size when compared to the St . Augustine campus . However , don ’ t judge it by its size . The campus is driven by a wealth of
Caribbean students all eager to express their culture to the world . You will meet personss from Jamai ca , Belizee , St . Kitts and Nevis .
And finally you would finish walking and reach “ up on the hill ” where the passerby mentioned earlier . It seems small on the outward appearance but may I tell l you , this is where the most part of your next two years are going to be spent . Forget about staying home and studying etc . That small building there you will be seeing is equipped with the best resources you can ever come across anywhere in the Caribbean with respects to Law . You will l learn to cherish it especially those of you who grew accustomed to the last two shelves which was dedicated to us
