Ms . Madeira has also expressed her pride and excitement at the formation of the Law Society and the activities that were successfully undertaken . She also re-called some of the students who may have passed through the St . Augustine “ grooming stables ”. Persons such as Justice Maureen Rajnauth-Lee , Justice Wendell Kangalloo , Justice Geoffrey Henderson , Justice Mark Mohammed ; Mrs . Deborah Thomas-Felix , President of the Industrial Court immediately came to her mind . She also hopes to see the society grow from strength to strength and be the true model to law aspirants . So far our student body has more than answered the call of the slogan “ Expansion of a Faculty , The Birth of a Society ” and have indeed served as “ true models to law aspirants ”.
The student body at the Faculty has hosted a slew of events , notably , the launch of the UWI STA Law Society on Thursday 24 th March 2011 . This event was attended by the then Law Association President Dana Seetahal S . C and Professor Rhoda Reddock , Deputy Principal of the St . Augustine Campus of the University of the West Indies .
The society in the short period since its inception has also hosted a mooting seminar conducted by lecturers , Mr . Timothy Affonso and Mrs . Alicia Elias-Roberts . Subsequently , a mooting competition was successfully organized with representatives from both the Year 1 and Year 2 classes . This mooting competition was judged by panellists Mr . John Jeremie SC , Mr . Affonso and Mrs . Elias-Roberts .
Notably , the Society held its inaugural election of officers for the 2012-2013 academic year on Wednesday 14 th of March , 2012 and an Election Debate which preceded the actual elections . It must be lauded that the democratic process has been smooth , without any controversy , a practice which the society must endeavour to continue . On a lighter note , the Society successfully held its first annual Sports Day on March 22 nd 2012 .
The members of the Steering Committee , who were pivotal to the formation of the society , especially the outgoing Chairperson Lisa Theodore , must be recognized for their great work in chartering this “ vessel ” in the tumultuous period of the expansion of the Faculty . Impressively , the Steering Committee was able to formulate a Constitution , which forms the overarching regulatory framework of the organization .
The road has not always been easy . A great responsibility was undertaken by the student body as they became the “ pioneers ” of the full-fledged Faculty . Of course there will be teething problems which can and will be corrected as the faculty progresses . There remain several outstanding issues , which may justifiably be of concern to the student body . A proper library facility is much needed if we are to be on par with our sister faculties . Clearly , a state of the art library facility will serve as an invaluable resource to budding attorneys . Furthermore , as noted by Dr . Le Gall , there is the need for a proper publications agenda on the part of our lecturers . The publication of articles in law journals such as the West Indian Law Journal and Caribbean Law Review can only serve to boost the academic esteem in which our Faculty is held by other academic institutions of Law .
However , as the age old adage goes “ Rome was not built in a day ” and certainly this Faculty would not be ! Lingering doubts also fester with regards to the permanent site of the Faculty of Law . Will the Faculty be relocating fully to Debe ? Of course , this may not come to the fore
