About the Society
The members are at the heart of the Society and it recognises the importance of supporting members ' needs in order to be successful .
The Society is made up of a number of committees which focus on different aspects of radiological protection and the work of the Society . Committee reports for the year are on pages 8 to 14 .
The Society continues to organise appropriate scientific meetings and produces regular publications in the form of the Journal of Radiological Protection and the weekly member email , SRP Weekly . Where appropriate members are notified of consultative documents and their views sought . Additional publications , following workshops , and information leaflets are produced periodically .
New Honorary Fellows ( presentations made at the 2021 Annual Dinner )
John Bradshaw John has been a key supporter of SRP activities for many years . He is the current Chair of Events Committee and has been a member of the Committee since 2005 . In the days when the Annual Conference was a bit smaller than it is now , he calmly looked after all the liaison with speakers regarding their audio-visual requirements , loading their presentations on his laptop , often at very short notice . And he was always in the sessions before everyone else ( even after a late night at the Annual Dinner on the evening before ). John has also been being a longstanding member of the Legislation and Standards Committee .
John started his career at UKAEA Harwell and joined the Radiation Protection team at AWE in 1995 . Here he has provided RPA advice to almost all the facilities on site including all the radiological new builds . John is recognised as one of the few who have the capacity to calculate ' on the fly ' with an encyclopaedic knowledge of isotopes , physical data quantities , physics mechanisms and history of site . He was appointed the first Head of Profession ( Radiation Protection ) at AWE . Full citation
Steve Griffiths Steve was elected as SRP ' s first Director of Science and Technology in 2018 ( following SRP ' s restructure ) with responsibility for the new Directorate and its nine committees . Prior to this he was Chair of SRP ' s Legislation & Standards Committee from 2002-11 and is a current member of the Governance Committee .
He played a key role in formulating the new management structure , ensuring that it supports the delivery of the Society ' s responsibilities as a chartered body . He has also helped to develop processes which address the Charities Act requirements and ensure good governance . A particular interest of Steve ' s has been the initiatives being developed to enhance SRP ' s range of training , development of membership categories and greater accessibility to a broader range of people that work across the profession .
Steve has had a long career across the nuclear industry from Heath Physics to Waste Plant Manager at Amersham International , a dockyard health physicist then a nuclear regulator for 30 years .
2021 Dunster Lecture presented by Professor Mike Wood
Professor Mike Wood holds the Chair in Applied Ecology at the University of Salford . He gained his BSc ( Hons ) in Zoology in 1998 from the University of Liverpool and then spent a year working as a fruit machine installation engineer to save up enough money to pay for his MSc studies at the University of Manchester . In 2000 , Mike began his career in radiation protection at the University of Liverpool – first as an environmental consultant and then as an academic . He has spent the last two decades working on the development of the international environmental radiation protection system and conducting underpinning radioecological research . During his time at Liverpool , Mike also completed a PhD in radioecology .
Mike is a Chartered Radiation Protection Professional , SRP Council member and Editorial Board member for the Journal of Radiological Protection . He has been an invited expert for various International Atomic Energy Agency and European Commission activities in the areas of radiation protection and risk communication . Mike ' s research in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone has received extensive media coverage and he has developed various innovative approaches to public engagement and education , including Virtual Chernobyl . His contributions to radioecology and radiation protection have been recognised through prestigious awards , including the Times Higher Education Research Award ( 2016 ) and The Society for Radiological Protection ' s Founders ' Medal ( 2018 ).
The Dunster Lecture series was launched by the Society in 2011 to honour the memory of John Dunster . Previous speakers are Jack Valentin , Peter Marsden , Roger Cox , John Croft , Roger Coates OBE , Pete Burgess , Richard Wakeford , Roger Clarke CBE and Claire Cousins .
