SRP Annual Review 2020/21 | Page 10

We cheered upselves up this winter by launching

The SRP National Pie Day Competition
Judged ( by the membership ) on look and the way in which it relates to radiation science .
We had 11 entries – hopefully more next year . National Pie Day is always on 23 January .
Our first winner is Fearnley Evison ( Aurora )
Fearnley says : This is technically six pies cooked together in the trefoil shape with two separate fillings available . Ingredients are SRP themed ( Squash , ' Rooms and Parsnips for the vegans and ( vegan ) Sausage , Red pepper and Potato for the other vegans ). Pastry is shortcrust with vegetable shortening , but one batch was flavoured with paprika and turmeric . A massive thank you to SRP for running this competition . It was so nice to do something a bit different !”
Second place went to John Lampard ( Cavendish Nuclear ) John says “ It is a Banana and Brazil Nut Lattice Pie . By my reckoning it is about 10 microSv for the whole pie and about 1.25 microSv per slice ( pie serves 8 ). The filling is banana , brazil nut , dries fruit and sugar . Best served with cream .”
Third place went to Emily Vernon ( Postdoctoral Researcher at University of Plymouth ), “ So a bit of background … Green stuff - radioactive waste . Yellow stuff - gamma radiation . Red / blue stuff - DNA strand with single strand break . ”
