SRI LANKA CLUB SYMPOSIUM TOASTMASTERS Issue October-November 2013 BEST OF THE BEST WINNING SPEECH “AMMA (MOTHER)”SESSION 403 - TM PANDULA Since an embryo conceived in a womb…….. For 260 days she under goes a period of tremendous pain and suffering, Unbearable Headaches as changes are occurring in a mother’s body with continuous release of hormones and chemicals. She can’t eat properly … every morning she struggles and vomits for nearly three months, Carrying 10 to 15 kg in her ever obtruding tummy ….. Backache… high blood pressure body aches in numerous places. Then she bears the most intolerable pain a human would ever face ……. Labour pains at the delivery of the baby. Yet she has no complaints as she under goes all the pain and suffering during her pregnancy as she is the mother of the expected baby. Mothers love is incomparable to any other feeling a living being on this planet would ever possess. Even though she is there no more. Without a doubt this is common to all human mothers and 90% or more animal mothers …. The above song depicts the story of the mother of the song writer Senior Solicitor Ranbanda Seneviratne. Chena cultivation without a shelter, He compares to his widowed mother, and the sudden untimely rain is compared to the extreme poverty for which his mother used every possible means to avoid exposing him. There he emotionally portraits the protection, education and guidance given to him by her till he became a reputed lawyer in the country. http://slcs.toastmastersclubs.org http://slcs.toastmastersclubs.org “ONCE IN A CHENA CULTIVATION A SUDDEN STORM CAME DOWN POURING AS THERE WAS NO SHELTER... MY MA... YOU COVERED ME UNTIL THE RAIN VANISHED NOT LETTING A SINGLE DROP OF RAIN FALLS ON TO ME” In the second phrase he put in to words a second torrential rain came down in terms of insult, abuse and disparage in which his wife’s love and affection washed away in the Giant Canal (Yoda Ela). Again his mother comes to console and protect him as he says how he felt the scent or the fragrance of mother’s love. The mother still is his only refuge and safe heaven. For a mother her child is always and forever is her baby whom she cared and adored, whoever he is to the outside world; even a criminal or a killer in that matter. Finally as he sees a third storm coming through as the clouds get darker over the city of Colombo and the strong cold wind comes ashore and he asks “O mother will you be there waiting for me at the hedge gate when I run to you leaving behind all the positions, grandeur and opulence?” He only knows one place where he could solicit the protection and shelter … at his mother …… even though she is there no more. This very emotional song which is often ranked as the best song ever written in Sinhala on mothers love shows the eternal love and bondage between a mother and a child which would lasts probably a few or many life times. Now it is our turn in paying a true tribute to a great mother by being a true son or a daughter as she ever wanted us to be.
