LET TER FROM THE GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENT
RICH'S RAP
January was a continued success story for me and
the staff here in the Maintenance Department. Great
environmental conditions and unexpected ‘chamber
of commerce’ weather was pivotal for us in growing a
healthy stand of Rye and Bermuda grasses. Our over-
seeding continued to mature and allowed for us to mow
at a lower height of cut to provide an even better lay for
the ball throughout the fairways and roughs. On-going
cart path work and repurposing of the old path material
was carried out throughout all twenty-seven holes
that have native paths. They are much better than the
previous months and will continue to get better soon.
Water conservation was taken to a new level prior to the
previous four months. My team is working very hard
to provide much better playing conditions on holes
that are historically wet and hard to play due to over
watering. We have reduced our water usage by up 50%
on the entire property and even more on select areas.
Making sure we do our due diligence prior to watering
has allowed us to offer a better golfing experience
throughout. You will also notice that our creativity
has kicked in when setting the golf course up for daily
traffic. It is top priority to allow the golfer to enjoy the
course to its fullest! Signs, ropes and stakes for directing
cart traffic is a tough task for all in our industry. We are
continuously monitoring wear patterns and constantly
moving our signage to help keep our turf as healthy as
possible. This cart path traffic initiative does not go off
without a hitch if we do not have the help from Brad
and Keith at the Clubhouse.
Employee Spotlight:
Aliedo Dorvilus
Aliedo Dorvilus has been working at Spanish Wells Golf & Country Club for seven
years. Aliedo is a key component to our maintenance team. His hard work and
dedication to be at work every day and give it his all every single time is critical to our
success daily. Aliedo is originally from Haiti and has lived in the Naples since 1980.
Aliedo has also been working at Publix locally now for twenty years as a stocker. Married
with five children and working two jobs speaks volumes for who he is as a person. You
can find him on a machine that mows our greens and tees all the way to a machine
that maintains the rough. Please take the time to shake his hand or say hi when the
opportunity presents itself!
See you around the course,
