SLAS Core Values
Most people that I know feel that core value classes are not very useful, as they“ waste their time”. 9 out of 10 people I asked said that the core value classes don’ t really benefit them. Although they can take away your wildcat time in which you do your homework, which saves time for us to do other activities at home, core values are essential to us and can be utilized in our daily lives to improve us as a person overall.
Proficient Communicator
The core value of being a‘ Proficient Communicator’ allows you to prepare for future jobs, as almost all jobs require speaking to people. For example, when you are discussing selling a new product in a company you are working for, you need to speak well and give good ideas to the people in order for them to develop upon those ideas and eventually succeed. If you don’ t articulate and the others don’ t understand you, the company might lack some ideas or suggestions that could help it succeed. Also, speaking proficiently could help you build relationships with people. While discussing with your colleagues about the new product, if you speak well enough, you might end up making a friend through having discussions with them. Not only is this true for work, but it is also helpful as a student, because you can easily make friends by just discussing anything.
Compassionate Citizen
Simply helping others, which is part of the core value of being a‘ Compassionate Citizen’, can build trust and relationships between people. For example, if you play soccer / football with a random person who doesn’ t know the rules and you help them learn, you get closer to them while you help and maybe even when you play together. Being compassionate allows you to see the perspective of others, to understand them deeply, which reduces anger and isolation.
