members
of the month
Every newsletter, we will be featuring two students from MAASU's member schools that are nominated by their peers. This month's two nominees are Nola Tran and Maggie Zheng!
Nola Tran is a sophomore from Lee’s Summit, Missouri, studying Nuclear Medicine and Spanish at the University of Missouri. She has been involved in the APIA community as the Co-Programming Chair for Mizzou's Asian American Association. She occasionally attended events for AAA during her freshman year, and decided to take a leap of faith by applying for an executive board position at the end of that year. She decided to do this after attending spring MAASU 2016 and meeting so many people that inspired her, many of whom were from her own school. She wanted to become part of the Mizzou AAA family in a way that would let her impact any future members and help them find inspiration to continue making strides in the APIA/minority community.
Along with being on Mizzou AAA, She is also the Co-Philanthropy Chair for Eta Chapter of Alpha Phi Gamma.
This semester, she and her fellow Co-Philanthropy Chair are hosting a workshop about refugees, a bowling fundraiser, and APhiG Speaks, which will be occurring nationwide at all of their Chapters.
In the past, she also participated in Mizzou Alternative Breaks where she had the opportunity to travel to Memphis and provide services to a couple of children's shelters in that area. She also took part in Mizzouthon last year, where funds were raised for the University of Missouri Women and Children's Hospital NICU. The main event included a dance marathon that lasted for 13.1 hours in which they remained standing and/or dancing the entire time for all the children who do not have the ability to stand. The impact of both of these organizations are lasting, and she plans on supporting them and continuing to participate if possible throughout the remainder of my college career.
