MATTHEW DEARTH
Matthew Dearth is the managing attorney for the Thief River Falls office of the Minnesota State Public Defender . He manages attorneys and staff court appointed to represent criminal defendants in northwest Minnesota . In addition to his management and training responsibilities , Dearth also maintains a full attorney caseload . He currently serves on the SBAND Young Lawyers Section as the American Bar Association Young Lawyers Division delegate .
Dearth was born in Winnipeg , Canada . After coming to the United States , he attended the University of North Dakota ( UND ) and graduated magna cum laude in 2013 with a bachelor ’ s degree in political science . From there , he enrolled in the UND School of Law , where he graduated cum laude and passed the North Dakota bar in 2016 . During law school , Dearth served on the Moot Court board , and was active in the International Human Rights Organization ( IHRO ), UND ' s immigration law clinic , and the UND Federalist Society .
Following licensure , Dearth served as a judicial law clerk to four of the nine district judges chambered in Cass County . He first served as an assistant public defender in Bemidji , Minn ., in 2017 , before moving to private practice , and then back to the Minnesota public defense system in 2023 .
In his spare time , Dearth enjoys wilderness exploration , model railroading , and long-range competitive target shooting . He currently lives in the Grand Forks area , with his wife , Anna , and their cat , Tux .
LISA ANDERSEN
Lisa Andersen serves as the chief deputy clerk for the North Dakota Supreme Court . She conducts extensive research and analysis in order to make recommendations regarding appealability , timeliness , and jurisdiction to the chief justice , Supreme Court , or clerk of the Supreme Court .

Andersen graduated cum laude from North Dakota State University in 2016 with a bachelor of science in agricultural communication and a minor in animal science . She graduated from the University of North Dakota School of Law in 2019 . During law school , she was actively involved with the “ North Dakota Law Review ,” the Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity , and Federalist Society .
Following graduation from law school , Andersen worked for an agricultural nonprofit . She then served as a judicial law clerk to the Honorable Daniel L . Hovland , U . S . District Court for the District of North Dakota . Before her work with the Supreme Court , Andersen worked in private practice representing landowners and agricultural producers . Andersen also currently serves as a judge advocate in the North Dakota National Guard .
