PICKING UP THE BATON : SUPERVISOR DAVE BROWN CONTINUES SUPERVISOR WILMA CHAN ’ S LEGACY OF ADVOCACY AND PUBLIC SERVICE
In 1994 , Wilma Chan was the first Asian American to be elected to the Alameda County Board of Supervisors . She served in the State Assembly from 2000 to 2006 , including two years as majority leader . She was re-elected to the County Board of Supervisors in 2010 . She was a remarkable and steadfast leader ( read Merriwether & Williams Insurance Services ’ tribute to Supervisor Wilma Chan ).

Following Supervisor Chan ’ s untimely death on November 3 , 2021 , the Alameda County Board of Supervisors appointed Wilma ’ s Chief of Staff , Dave Brown , to take over her District 3 Supervisory seat on November 16 , 2021 .
Supervisor Brown has a long history of public service and was a close ally and supporter of Supervisor Wilma Chan . From 2013 to 2021 , Brown served as Supervisor Chan ’ s chief of staff and senior policy advisor . From 1992 to 1998 , he had also served as her political aide , before co-founding a technology company that provides data sharing and data analytics for non-profits and public agencies . From 2002-2012 , Brown was co-president of a campaign strategy and fundraising firm , and from 2004 to 2008 , he served on the West Contra Costa School Board .
“ I intend to continue Wilma ’ s priority initiatives focusing on anti-poverty efforts , education , economic empowerment and addressing basic needs ,” says Supervisor Brown , “ Wilma was a huge champion of healthcare coverage for all and we will continue her work to recognize the importance of food , opportunity and lifeline support to create a healthier County ; continuing our partnership with Dig Deep Farms that helps the County advance healthier eating and has an economic component , including a 10-acre farm in Union Center that will help BIPOC farmers learn new ways to become more economically self-sufficient , while producing food that our communities need .”
