Polecat in a pickle
A polecat had a lucky escape after falling into a 15ft-deep drain at the sewerage treatment site near Taunton in Somerset.
Workers left a long plank down the hole overnight but the polecat was too weak to make its way out. It was sat on a ledge in the drain shivering and needed urgent help. RSPCA Animal Collection Officer( ACO) Clara Scully, however, came to the rescue, helped by the Fire Service.
They were able to get a long ladder down the drain and coax him into a carrier. He then went to the RSPCA West Hatch Wildlife Centre to recuperate before release.
After just a short stay in the Centre the polecat was released back to the wild in a safe location – and will hopefully stay clear of drains in the future.
