NEW NORTHWEST SENIOR HOCKEY LEAGUE OPENS The new North West Senior Hockey League is officially underway. There are six teams in the loop playing the majority of games in the North Interlake: OCN Blues, Norway House North Stars, Cross Lake Islanders, Peguis Mohawks, Lake Manitoba Eagles and Fisher River Terriers. The league President is Lorne Cochrane, who hails from Fisher River, but is a businessman in Winnipeg. Gerald McCorrister is the League Coordinator. The League is sanctioned by Hockey Manitoba and will play all games under Hockey Manitoba rules. The league champions will also play in the Provincial Senior A playoffs this spring. At press time, the leading scorer was one of the greatest scorers in the Keystone Junior B Hockey League for many seasons, Skyler TaitReaume of the Norway House North Stars. Northwest Senior Hockey ARNISH PATEL WINS GOLD IN ALBERTA Arnish Patel of the Winnipeg Winter Club took home his first national U-19 Boys Singles Badminton gold medal during the first weekend of November by defeating Lee Yang of B.C. 21-17 21-16 at Badminton Canada’s Yonex Alberta Junior Elite Tournament in Edmonton. Born in India, Arnish emigrated to Thompson in 2011, and moved to Winnipeg in 2012. He won gold in his first provincial U-15 tournament at the Wildewood Club and since then has won several provincial titles in both singles, doubles and mixed doubles. He has also represented Manitoba in Junior National Championships, Western Canadian Team Championships and Western Canada Summer Games. In early November, Patel also won a bronze medal in the U-19 Mixed Doubles Arnish Patel, Badminton star by pairing with Ontario’s Cara De Belle, a partnership that was newly formed in Winnipeg at the Prairie Junior Elite in September, and just attempted for the first time in Edmonton. Next on the docket for Arnish is the Western Canadian Team Championship Tryouts in November. Until then, Arnish plans to continue his rigorous training schedule at the Winnipeg Winter Club, and keep up with his grade 12 studies at Fort Richmond Collegiate. MANITOBA SKATERS QUALIFY FOR NATIONALS Senior Women’s skater, Deidre Russell will lead nine Manitoba skaters into the 2017 Skate Canada Challenge Competition in Pierrefonds (Montreal), Que. In early November, Manitoba’s newest figure skating team was identified at the 2017 Skate Canada Manitoba Sectional Championship, held at the Access Event Centre, in Morden, Man. In Pierrefonds, Manitoba’s skaters will compete against the rest of the country’s best skaters at the Skate Canada Challenge. The event will run from Nov. 30 to Dec. 4 and approximately 500 skaters from across the country will compete at this flagship event. These top Manitoba skaters have qualified through the 2017 Skate Danae Russell Canada Sectional Manitoba Championships. This is the only opportunity for Novice, Junior and Senior skaters to qualify for the 2017 Canadian Tire Figure Skating Championships, in Ottawa, Ontario, from January 16-22, 2017.
