Winnipeg’ s Nicole Walker is a sensational athlete. The 27-year-old triathlete finished an amazing 16 th at the 2016 in the exhausting, grueling heat at the Ironman World Championship in Hawaii early last month. Not only was she 16 th in the women’ s overall event( with more than 1,200 competitors), she was seventh in her age group and 16th overall. She was also the No. 1 North American female in a field that included some gifted athletes from the United States, Germany and Australia. Walker said the race was much harder than she expected. After all, the temperature with the humidex in Hawaii reached 40 degrees Celsius.

Canadian National Team member Desiree Scott of Winnipeg, held her Third Annual Desiree Scott Soccer Camp at the University of Winnipeg RecPlex late last month as girls 8-18 got out onto the pitch to learn the game from the twotime Olympic bronze medalist.

KidSport Winnipeg, a non-profit organization giving financial assistance to young athletes. Scott plays pro soccer with Kansas City FC, but she’ s a former University of Manitoba Bisons star who was actually a Kidsport player growing up.“ I think it’ s just important that, now where I’ m at, to share the experiences and give back,” she said. Scott said her mother couldn’ t afford the registration fees for soccer and KidSport stepped in to keep her on the field.

WOMEN’ S GOLF RETURNS TO UNIVERSITY OF MANITOBA

The University of Manitoba will welcome women’ s golf back into the fold next season. The Bison women’ s golf program started in 2001 and took a leave of absence after the 2011 season due to lack of female golfers in Manitoba. Former Bison team member Bri-ann Tokariwski will be head coach of the women’ s golf team. Tokariwski is a former Manitoba Junior Champion and has won the Manitoba Women’ s Amateur three times. She has also represented Manitoba on numerous provincial teams. Garth

Goodbrandson will remain as the head coach for the Bison men’ s golf team and oversee and assist with fundraising for the women’ s golf team. The 2017 Bison women’ s golf team plans on competing in NAIA, Division 11 and 111 events in North Dakota, Minnesota and South Dakota. The team will also plan on qualifying for the 2018 Canadian University / College Championship. Five Manitobans have committed to join the Bison women’ s golf team for the 2017 fall season: Former Junior Champion, Veronica Vetesnik; 2016 Provincial Junior Team member, Marissa Naylor; Former Western Canada Games team member, Lexie Kopp; Gold medal winning Team Westman player at the 2016 Manitoba Games, Tianna Slate; and former St Mary’ s team member, Kaitlynn Santiano.
