SportsLife Magazine
brings you the hottest news
stories in Manitoba sports.
This time, we’ll catch up with
a number of the star athletes
who have been so sensational in 2015
Brown has sensational year
For former Canadian Olympian and Team Manitoba
boxing coach, Kent (The Bullet) Brown, 2015 has
been a banner year. The boxing coach and trainer who
runs his own gym on North Main – Elite Boxing and
MMA – is now working with a handful of tremendous
young fighters, both amateurs and pros; has the WIBA
World Women’s champion in his stable; trained a world
amateur champion this summer and will work the
corners of four of the five Winnipeg fighters at High
Stakes Havoc II at the Regent Casino Events and Gaming
Centre on Oct. 22. In fact, Brown has been training Kyle
Oliveira, Zafar Sacranie and WIBA women’s lightweight
world champion, Olivia (The Predator) Gerula and he’ll
also work the corner of King John Vernaus’ fighter Lee
Laquette. It certainly has been Kent Brown’s year.
WHSFL stars in the community
The Winnipeg High School Football League has
kicked off its 2015 season and for commissioner
Rick Henkewich, there is a lot to take care of.
From fundraising to scheduling, the WHSFL
gives back to the community in Winnipeg.
“The WHSFL raised $3,000 for the Never Alone
Foundation and our next big fundraising effort
is the Ronald McDonald House Food Drive,”
Henkewich said. “From this weekend’s games to
the end of the season, teams will be accumulating
non-perishable food items and cleaning supplies
for Ronald McDoanld House in Winnipeg.”
Henkewich is also trying to get a 5,000-seat high
school football stadium/soccer stadium built
at Tec Voc and he’s also got a season to operate.
So far Vincent Massey and St. Paul’s (Potter),
Steinbach and River East (Vidruk), and Lorette,
Dryden and Kenora (Currie) are leading the pack.
Our photographer, James Carey Lauder got out to
a Dakota-Grant Park game.
