SportsLife is Manitoba’s amateur sports magazine. This is where
sports fans will meet the Olympians of tomorrow and the
medalists of today and they all compete right here in Manitoba.
We exist to pay tribute to those who make sport so important
to this province.
Published by SportsLife Publications, it is edited by Scott
Taylor and is designed and developed by Scott Taylor, Debbie
Dunmall and OV Suvajac. SportsLife Magazine is printed by The
Winnipeg Sun.
Any opinions expressed belong solely to the authors and do

In Praise of
Manitoba’s
Athletes
are blessed here in
W eManitoba.
Call it good
genetics, clean water, healthy
living, whatever you like. We
produce some of the finest
athletes in the world.
Here at SportsLife, it’s an honour
for us to introduce you to these
athletes. In our last edition, we
met water skier Taryn Grant,
football star Matt Kaneski, basketball player Sentilla
Bubb, baseball star Brandon Racette and swimmer
Chantal Van Landeghem.
This time we present a whole new lineup.
There is Christie Lavallee, a young university science
student who happens to be legally blind. She is also the
national junior 3-D Archery champion. There is Alicia
Ogoms, a young woman from St. Mary’s Academy who
has gone on to become one of the finest volleyball
players in Division 1 of the NCAA. And there is Kimberly
Moors, a single mom from Thompson who has become
on of the finest swimmers in the CIS.
We also want you to meet the real Olivia Gerula,
Winnipeg’s world champion female prize fighter; Peter
Stoykewych, a Winnipeg kid, who has gone from the
Monarchs, to the Blues, to Colorado College and now
to the American Hockey League’s Manitoba Moose; and
Patrick Young a high school football star at Grant Park
who dreams of playing in the CFL.
We also want you to know who’s going into the
Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame this year. We want you to
get to know Luis (The Hit Man) Alen of the Winnipeg
Goldeyes. And we want you to meet a handful of great
young swimmers from the Manta Swim Club who will
likely be the future of the sport in our province.
Welcome to our latest edition of SportsLife Magazine,
Winnipeg’s Place to Play.
