For the first time in the 78 year existence of the elusive Heisman Trophy, a Freshman
has won the award. Texas A&M Quarterback Johnny Manziel, (AKA Johnny Football), came out of nowhere to dominate opposing defenses and eventually add his name to the prestigious Heisman class. A Freshman has only finished second in the voting once before, when Adrian Peterson lost the vote to Matt Leinart in 2004, prior to Saturday night.
Manziel won the Heisman vote over two other outstanding players
that were named Heisman finalists in Colin Klein and Manti Te'o.
Klein had an amazing year under center for the Kansas State
Wildcats and finished Third in the Heisman voting with 60 first
place votes. Klein gained a total of 37 touchdowns (15 passing, 22
rushing) and has a Quarterback rating of 156.1 (158.3 scale).
Without a loss against Baylor, the Heisman probably would have
gone to Klein by a landslide. Notre Dame Linebacker Manti Te'o
finished Second in the Heisman voting with 321 first place votes
behind an incredible 103 tackle and 7 interception season. Te'o
and the Fighting Irish will play Alabama in the National
Championship game as Te'o will try and lead his team to their
first undefeated season since 1988.
