What we have learnt What our workforce looks like The Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport & Physical Activity ( CIMSPA ) – the professional body for the sport and physical activity workforce – defines our sector as one that contains two fields : industries and occupations .
Industries
Here we highlight those different types of activities that are being delivered and the venues for those activities . These activities are represented by sector bodies and affiliates , which organise training , education and development .
Occupations
This is where we highlight the different roles performed as part of those activities and the people that deliver them . Those on the front line of delivery – the coaches – are backed by a support chain of managers , policymakers and the support workforce . Beyond those are roles that make up the wider workforce , people who might enable activity to take place but don ’ t act within this sector , for example the parents of participants .
Some occupations operate across several industries . For example , a swimming coach is a front line occupation which works in the leisure operations , performance sport and community sport industries . Their occupation means they are backed by a support chain but their industry gives them access to specific training and education . In this example they could train through the Swimming Teachers ’ Association or Swim England , on courses checked and endorsed by CIMSPA .
Understanding where these responsibilities for development and support sit is crucial for our sector to structure its funding and accountability .
