Loading Data / Double Disco Animal Style
Think Queens of The Stoneage with less denim and yesterday’s gel, more leather
and worn steel. Patrón Data, vocal maestro, has one of those voices that haunts
you as you walk down darkened streets, even if they’re just the ones in your mind.
His treatment of the pulse-quickeningly licentious (and
often bizarre) lyrics perfectly complements the honesty
of the strings, the cheekily gospel-esque keyboard
stylings and perfectly obsequious drumming. The final
product is an immaculately produced album of groove
rock (duh, I mean Alain Johannes does produce for
QOTSA and Them Crooked Vultures) that is possibly
my most played of the past year. Oh, did I mention that
they’re (for the most part) French? That really shouldn’t
make a difference, but it kind of does…
BEST TRACKS
Give The Rat A Name /
Choosing second favourites
off this album is some
next-level difficulty, but
there is one clear top track
for me and it’s this sexy,
dark, slightly worse for wear
panther of a track. The band
takes you on a brief but
powerful journey through a
twisted mind and you’re left
feeling a little bit altered for
it. At least until the next track
grabs you and whisks you
off into its groovy madness.
Double Disco Animal Style /
The eponymous track gets
this second spot because
it starts the album off so
very perfectly. Your mind
is instantly hauled onto a
dancefloor at the peak of the
night when things start to
get a little jagged and straps
start to trip off shoulders;
strangers exchange looks
and all the right cracks start
to show (not those ones,
don’t be nasty). That voice,
those strings and that beat
assure you that they are with
you all the way.
