SPLICED LIFE /

Jeremy Loops / Trading Change
Funky motherfluffer Jeremy Loops has been wriggling his way into mass
musical consciousness for a while now, but until Trading Change came out,
he was kinda just that guy I looked forward to seeing at concerts.
Now that the album has dropped and he got awarded
Best Live Act in the 2013 MK Awards, th is guy is
seriously making his mark an indelible one. I must say
that I was a bit nervous to see what his album would
be like, seeing as his strength lies (or, you know, jumps
around) on stage; but I was very pleasantly surprised to
discover that his energy and skill translate seamlessly
into a studio recording. As for the man himself, dare
I say “genius”; I might just, given the shear musicality
he harnesses. The fact that he manages to make the
harmonica cool again is pretty rad too.
BEST TRACKS
Down South / I loved
this song before I saw
it performed live, but
when I saw him actually
recording and looping
that opening “female”
vocal it really hit me just
how incredible this man
is. The perfect layering of
vocals, harmonica and
just the right prominence
of drums, all with his truly
lovely lyrics make this one
of my favourite songs of
2014 so far.

Trip Fox / I have this
theory that the 4th track
is one of the best (if not
the best) on just about any
album. It’s certainly no
different in this case. It’s
just such a South African
song. Yes, it does have
a local flavour running
through its rhythmic veins,
but more than that it’s
just such an energised
trip-through town with
your mates kind of tune.
Happiness.
