On day four , we crossed the state line from Baja Norte into Baja Sur . We noticed a change in the landscape as we rode over several 3,000-foot summits , past flat-topped volcanic cones and cactus-covered hills . We arrived at the charming pueblo of San Ignacio , an authentic desert oasis nestled at the bottom of a wide arroyo . It had date palms and a natural spring-fed pond where we spent a restful night . On the morning of day five , we arose for a hearty breakfast , knowing we had an exciting day ahead . We would soon encounter the massive Volcán Las Tres Vírgenes , a reminder of the volcanic activity that shaped the recent lava flows surrounding us . Our route took us down the treacherous Devil ' s Grade , seven miles of switchbacks that descend to the warm waters of the Sea of Cortez . As we wound along the shores , we were treated to the breathtaking beauty of Bahía Concepción , one of Baja California ’ s most scenic treasures , with its deep-blue waters , volcanic islands and secluded beaches .
EMBRACING THE OPEN ROAD
On day six , we continued our journey , riding through the desert along Highway 1 , passing through Ciudad Constitución where we stopped for lunch . In the afternoon , we headed east across the vast desert expanse toward the coast of the Sea of Cortez , eventually arriving in La Paz . As the capital of Baja California Sur , La Paz is known for its vibrant seafront Malecón promenade and beautiful beaches .
By the afternoon , we reached Loreto , the oldest Spanish settlement on the West Coast . This charming town offered a picturesque central plaza , quaint shopping spots , and a variety of excellent restaurants where we could relax and soak in the atmosphere . However , as we were leaving Loreto , one of our fellow riders lost control of his bike and crashed into a guard rail . He badly injured his leg but did survive - a true reminder of the dangers on the road .
On day seven our destination was the popular resort town of Cabo San Lucas , and we were excited to experience everything it had to offer . Continuing along Highway 1 through the desert , we rode beneath the shadow of Cerro del Venado and rolled into San José del Cabo . From there , we followed the coastline of Bahía San Lucas , once a favorite hiding spot for pirates in the 16th and 17th centuries who waited for Spanish treasure ships . Just before arriving in Cabo , we were treated to a stunning view of ' Land ’ s End ,' the southernmost tip of the Baja Peninsula ! We enjoyed Cabo and rested there for a day or two before catching our plane back to Pensacola , FL . Onward and upward ! Gerald Hughes
