embracing the open road
Living near Orange Beach , Alabama offers the chance to enjoy scenic beaches , peaceful inland waters , friendly locals , and delicious seafood . However , I had always been curious about the landscapes of the Baja Peninsula located south of California and the Mexican border . In March 2022 , we decided to embark on a 1,292-mile journey to explore this area . We joined a guided tour with eleven other motorcycles that would take us from Los Angeles to Cabo . On the eve of this incredible adventure , we met our fellow riders for an orientation meeting at a hotel in LA . We would be riding with people from Germany , Canada , France , Scotland , Ukraine , and America . We were all excited to ride through some of the greatest and remote desert roads left in North America .
On the first day , we picked up our rented motorcycles from EagleRider . Shortly after , we were on the road , cruising south along the California coastline toward the border at Tijuana , Mexico . After crossing into Mexico , we reached our final destination for the day : the bustling port town of Ensenada . After dinner , we enjoyed the sunset over Ensenada Bay , and it was then we realized we were on the verge of something truly spectacular . The next morning we headed south on Mexico Highway 1 , leaving the busy border towns behind . As we rode deeper into Baja , Cirio trees and giant Cardon cacti began to appear alongside the road . We entered the Vizcaíno Desert , one of the most fascinating desert regions on the continent , where we experienced expansive views of boulder formations , rugged hills , and dense desert vegetation . We arrived in Cataviña just in time to watch the desert sunset behind massive boulders and cacti . It had been a long day , and we knew the next day ’ s ride would be even longer , so we made sure to get a good night ’ s rest .
