Spirituality?
Is it
evolution
or just a
phase?
Are you one of those people
who answers “Are you
religious?” with the words
“I’m spiritual, but I’m not
religious.”?
It means you must have
thought about the question, at
least a little. Or your response
would be no or that you’re an
atheist. And the fact that you’ve
considered spirituality pretty
much defines you as a human
being.
Ever since we came down from
the trees, out of the caves or
the Garden Of Eden or
wherever you believe we came
from, humans have agonised
over death. We are reputed to
be the only creatures that are
aware of their own mortality or
immortality as we now seem to
have evolved to believe. Even
the Christians who are
convinced we live in the
material world only once and
then go to a heaven (which
only contains other
Christians!), believe in an
afterlife, a reward for a life of
good deeds, or purgatory for
spending their one lifetime as a
pirate, cyberbully or politician.
Spirituality was wrapped in
religion for many centuries,
and it’s hard to think of any
ancient society where more
people were secular than
followed some spiritual path –
however many Gods were
waiting at the end of it.
For most of us, it’s easier to
follow the teachings of a
prophet or guru, who lays the
rules out for us, gives us
prayers to say or songs to sing
that make us feels connected,
than it is to unite with spirit as
an individual. In fact, the more
organised religions became, the
more individual thought was
discouraged as the clerics took
hold and decided how ancient
texts should be interpreted.
