Leak found within Keystone Pipeline: April 2, 2016
A major part of the Pipeline was shut down in order to contain the spill. Over 16,800 gallons of oil were leaked into the ecosystem within South Dakota. Residents along the pipeline consistently express concern for their own safety. TransCanada ( owner of Keystone Pipeline ) said they have not "observed significant impacts to the environment" and that there were no "significant" bodies of waters around. The Keystone Pipeline carries Tar-sands from Canada, a thicker, dirtier oil that makes cleanup for accidents costly and difficult. TransCanada and other pipeline companies do not have an effective way of detecting leaks or spills. Without a viable way of either spill cleanup or detection, these pipelines need to be better regulated by the Government These companies are playing with our ecosystems, therefore our lives.
