Ole Mas
Ole Mas is a part of Traditional Mas played by members to sarcastically make fun of the people and issues in the country . Players of this mas gather information on current affairs from the local and international trending news topics and re-enact them in street theatre on J ’ ouvert morning using placards , old clothes , and whatever instrument or items that may enhance their display .
On J ’ ouvert morning , Ole Mas is normally the first to hit the streets in the wee hours of the morning . Like Calypso , Ole Mas function is to make a commentary on society ’ s ills in a positive but sarcastic manner . such as Ms . Alex Hood , Mr . Rudolph Harris , Mr . Jenna James , Mr . Glenroy Steele , Evelyn ‘ Pipe Man ’ Mark , Jude ‘ Cafe Bull “ Mitchell and members of the Grenada Lion ’ s Club who have contributed year after year to the survival of this Mas .
Ole Mas in Grenada is slowly becoming nonexistent . This unique Traditional Mas should not be allowed to vanish from our Carnival celebrations as it has merit in highlighting issues relating to social , political , and economic ills affecting society . A clarion call is made for the passing on and nurturing of this vibrant carnival tradition .
